Yo No Quepo En Tu Boca: a solo art show by Zomely Grullon
Zomely Grullon, Heather Brown and Veronica Polanco
“Yo No Quepo En Tu Boca” was a solo art show on view from May 26th to June 18th, 2022.
This collection of 18 mixed media on canvas paper works centers Zomely’s Dominican heritage and aims to interrupt the narrative that has been passed down through generations. Her work is a part of the counter-narrative to the anti-immigrant, anti-women, anti-BIPOC, anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment that marginalized communities face daily. She wants to show other queer latinas and people of color that they are not alone and that they are welcome in all spaces, so she paints self-portraits as a way of showcasing her humanity. She hopes that in seeing the physical manifestation of her emotional experiences and identity through her art, it will inspire you to look at yourself- truly look at yourself- and feel proud. Storytelling is a powerful way to come together. Zomely’s work is a symbol of who she is and the unwillingness to compromise the elements which make her, her -- her culture, her queerness, her messiness, her emotions, her community, all of her.
